the joys of travel

Here is the charming, friendly TSA guy at the Grand Junction airport. You can see what a good sense of humor he has. He made me take my cosmetic case out of my suitcase and he went through it to make sure I didn't have any liquids or gels over 3.5 oz. an then he made me throw my toothpaste away because the tube was too big. Can you IMAGINE?? My toothpaste tube was too big. I don't think they have enough to do here. It is not bad enough that the flight out of Grand Junction is delayed for an hour and will get into Denver about 5 minutes before my connecting flight is to leave for Newark - but I had to suffer the indignity of having my toothpaste taken away. The security people in Newark suddenly look like warm fuzzies. The terminal has six gates and this is the comfortable waiting area, which now has 16 people in it, including several children who are tossing a ball, playing catch while they wait. As you can see, there is plenty of room for that. There is also a good view of security, just outside the glass next to those sofas at the right rear of the picture. Here is the view outside the terminal window. The plane in the picture has left (obviously, not for Denver) and nothing else is around. They have just anounced that the incoming Denver flight (which will be my outgoing flight) is late and I may miss my connecting flight in Denver and have to be rebooked. Never a dull moment with air travel!

I know this airport well. Used to fly in and out when Ray was consulting in Colorado. This was where they gave me such a hard time about carrying my little, bitty sewing machine and made me stand at the inspection table and drink my bottle of water before they'd let me through. You'd think this was a major entry point for suspected terrorists. But I will say the woman who took the parking money was always super friendly and recommended a great restaurant one time.

I have been thinking about you today after the Denver weather hit the national news. Hope you get home safe and sound and are warming up.

That picture of the TSA guy gave me a good laugh! I hope you get home safely, and the Denver snow doesn't cause a huge delay. And thank you for a wonderful week.

I am surprised he let you take a picture of him. I was also in Colorado when you were there. I flew out of Denver on Friday morning, 6AM, right before things got bad. I was so lucky I got out.

I have had fun watching all the great artwork that was created this week! Thanks for sharing.

I keep hoping the various airports would standardize their procedures, because you never quite know what will be enforced -- but then maybe they'd standardize according to Grand Junction's guidelines, and that we DON'T want! My family lives in GJ, and they seem to have stuff confiscated too often.

Ah people always maon about these security measures but I can tell you that it is all abour security. Staff security that is. After all if he carried on in his jobsworth way like that you might have stuck that tube of toothpaste in a part of his anatomy that was nowhere near his teeth. Muts be why he took it - for his own protection!

PS I thought about the wisdom of posting that last comment then did it anyway. Ah well, thats probably me on a list of cyber-monitored people to be strip searched when I arrive in the States in November!
