a long day

It's always a long day when I haven't been out of the house.  Had planned to go to the studio today but when I went out to pick the newspapers up off the driveway and it was 20 degrees, I decided I was not going out agin.

Instead, I made soup: Ina Garten's Ribollita recipe was the starting point but I used dried chick peas with the beans and left out the kale and whatever other green stuff she mentioned because I didn't have any and wasn't about to go out and get some. Instead, I used cabbage, which was just fine. And I skipped the bean-soaking routine and used my trusty pressure cooker. The soup was done in 40 minutes. Anyway, it was delicious and I just had some (again) because it is late and I am cold.

Then, for dinner, I made one of the rice and lentil dishes that was in yesterday's NY Times.    Would have made them all, but was out of masoor dal and had just used some chick peas in the ribolitta. Then, salmon cakes spiced with ginger, which might have been better had I added an egg to told them together.  My dal didn't come out this soupy, it was fluffy.  I think it will make a good breakfast -- I am getting tired of oatmeal.
Yes, I actually did a little stitching today.  I'm working on another graffiti piece and am not sewing straight lines.  I got out my free motion foot, dropped the feed dogs, and am doing some very simple stuff that you really can't see.  That is the point: to add texture and not see the stitching.  Works for me.

I had a little fun playing around with Benjamin Moore's paint color picker on-line.  I have to get the kitchen painted and have big samples of 3 yellows.  Narrowed it down to two and wanted to look at one more that I don't have - so I used the computer.  Did it help?
You tell me.  Here is the current color -- sort of a greyed-down blue/green.  followed by three yellows, all of which look the same to me.

Maybe they are the same and I just forgot to save all the different ones. Sigh...I'll have to go buy a couple of quarts and play around.  meantime, off to bed.

The bottom or last of the three yellows definitely looks different from the first two to me. It's more golden, less gray, and thus warmer, I think is the way to describe it. And so described, it is my preference, but that, of course, is of no consequence.

I can see slight differences, and also prefer the last... warmer but not as intense as the first.

What a cook you are...a true artist. Look in the light areas of the paint samples to see the dif.

I made soup this week too. It is a bit of a long drawn out process since I don't have enough time in one evening to make vegetable beef soup. Two nights of cooking the beef until it is tender enough to shred and cooling so I can remove any fat, another evening for tomato sauce, some extra beef broth, carrots, celery and dried pinto beans to cook, and last night I could add the green beans, broccoli, spinach, and cauliflower. I would have added kale, but I didn't have any. I had some for breakfast and it was yummy! Have a great weekend!

I recently tried this Quinoa Breakfast Pudding and like it as an alternative to oatmeal, with similar warm creamy characteristics. (If I don't have greens in the house, I leave them out and it's still tasty, if not quite a packed with nutrition).

My fav of the yellows is #1 because it is more mustard than #3, the mango. #2 seems kind of maize, not bad either. None should be wrong. Sunshine!
Have a nice weekend!

I really like the greyed down blue/green that you have on the wall already the best. It's a very sophisticated look and complements the stainless steel appliances well.

Diane - the odd duck in the group who didn't pick one of the yellows. ;-)

I've had the blue-green for 100 years and while I love it, I'm tired of it. The kitchen is dark to begin with: northern exposure with a deck off the kitchen that looks into those beautiful woods. But-- the lights always have to be on, so I'm looking for some sunshine.

I made ribbolita the other day. Love it. The two grands here also enjoyed the leftovers. One ladled some over leftover tortellini …topped with parmesan and decided she liked her 'invention' the best.

Check out Sherwin Williams color China Doll. I have always painted my own walls but this new house has these 18 ft ceilings with angles all over the place, so I decided to hire it done this time. This color was suggested by one contractor that never got back to me with an estimate, go figure. Anyway, I went with it on ALL walls and white for trim and ceilings. My closest friend said, way to go, and this gives me the freedom of making color filled pieces to put up all over the place! Gotta love a good friend like that! I sure do. Remember that the color on the walls is only the backdrop to your art work pieces!

Rayna, the yellows do look a bit different, but with that gorgeous mahogany toned cabinetry, and knowing how you like to go off grid, how about some rich blue-greens??
Wish I could fly out to the east coast and take your workshop!
