it's that time of year again

A couple of weeks ago after I posted about something-or-other, I received an email from an irate person who said "I thought your blog was supposed to be about ART." I wrote back and told her that art and life are inseparable.  The next day I got a notice that she had unsubscribed to my blog.

I've been too busy dealing with a family crisis to post about boring blogs, or even to worry about my own blog being boring --but so be it.  Nobody can be thrilling all he time...and I find it difficult to write about my art if I have not been making any.  Perhaps I should invent something.

In the meantime, on another subject --
Rosh Hashanah is upon us - the Jewish New Year is early this year, coming on the heels of Labor Day! Good grief - summer has hardly ended and here we are!  Even worse, Chanukah is so early this year that it falls on Thanksgiving!  As we say - the Jewish holidays are either early or late -- they are never on time.

Early or not, I've been cooking and baking for tomorrow night's family dinner to usher in the year 5774.  This was tonight's activity - making ruglach, which I do once a year. I made the dough last night and put it in the fridge. Tonight, I rolled i out and filled it with raisins, choclate chips and nuts.
Then I rolled hem up into these little crescents and baked for 20 min or so.
They are so flaky and wonderful -- these are the last few before I put them into an airtight container.
I looked to see if I had ever posted the recipe and couldn't find it.  If I get any requests, I'll get around to it. If not, I won't.  Tonight, after spending almost all day in the kitchen, I think I am ready to rest up for tomorrow's houseful of kids and grands

For those of you who celebrate, I wish you a sweet year ahead.  In fact, I wish everybody a sweet year, no matter when it begins.

It's your blog and yes, life happens, keep sharing your journey!!

How rude to demand someone blog the way you wish them to. Oy!
Have a sweet New Year without demanding blog readers!
Big hugs,

You are right Rayna, life and art are inseparable. Making them behave as dance partners is what the thinking is all about. Thanks for making me hungry!

Enjoy the holiday- and don't change a thing on the blog.

I enjoy reading your blog, no matter what you are writing. Artists are not one-dimensional. If we were, our art would be boring. Thanks for being a real person and artist!

I started out reading your blog for the art, but you have become a friend since then... I love your posts, and say good riddance to anyone so toxic and self-centered that they think it's about them. May your holidays be full of love and laughter!

I started out wanting to blog only about the quilting, but life is a part of quilting/making art so my life has become part of my blog. It is your blog and you can blog about anything you want! How dare someone tell you what you should be blogging about. Life happens to all of us.

Enjoy the holiday, Rayna!

I like reading about your life as well as your art. I haven't met you in person but I feel that I know you through your blog. Thank you for sharing.

The life of an artist is all encompassing. Miserable lady not wanting to know all the other stuff. I love it and get a warm fuzy feeling reading all about your life, even the difficult stuff. It makes it real that creativity is a prt of who you are and not just some art popping robot. Keep blogging about everything, even the deer munching the flowers.

Shana Tovah, Rayna! I love your little rugulahs. Pardon my French, but screw that person who left the party -- her loss.
Have a very happy new year, hope it's wonderful in every way.

Shanah Tovah, Rayna. May this year be a sweet year for you! I have enjoyed getting to know you this year thru your blog...artistically and personally. Too bad some folks are just narrow minded! I would love to have your rugalach recipe although it seems very labor intensive and I am a lazy baker. It sounds delicious though, so I think I'll have to try it once.

I actually thought a blog was like an online diary...not only of art but of the life of an artist. How rude to want to write the script and still be surprised at the performance! Mmmmm...if you get around to writing the recipe that would be good! They look delicious! And if you don't? Well, you don't!!

Good grief! I guess people get to choose who's blogs they want to read, but it takes a really special person to complain about what you want to say on your blog... If you have time to post your recipe, I will make them, but in the meantime, have a lovely holiday.

I was drawn to you because of your art but after meeting you I am interested in reading your blog because I like who you are. Happy new year Rayna!!

Of course, I want the recipe! And don't forget to label with your recipe category...

On blog complaints, forget it. You could repost a photo from years ago and put some vague caption on it. Like "maybe some day ..." or "I remember forever ..." Make it sound mysterious as though you are sharing a deep personal secret with the world.

You could do that but it wouldn't be you! Just post when you want about what you want to share and let us decide to come back and visit or not. My favorite blogs are always just like checking in with friends.

Looking forward to the recipe.

Your art is so closely connected with your personality that I wonder if anyone can appreciate your art without being enchanted by your bright smile and the inviting and generous soul we meet when dealing with what you do. So if someone tries to separate these, she obviously doesn't have enough time to confront with the union of both. Not a loss for you; I'm afraid, rather for her.

Oh dear, Rayna, people like that lady you can do without. Blogging Without Obligation, always! I hope that the new year is a sweet year for you with more time to do the things that make your heart glad. xx

Warmest wishes for a sweet year ahead to you as well.

I'm so sorry to read that you've had to endure yet another family crisis. Ugh: when does life settle down for you?

I've had several people unsubscribe from my blog since I came clean with my cancer diagnosis. I guess people just don't like reality. Oh well!

Warm Hugs to you....and yes, please, I would love the recipe!

Happy New Year, Rayna. I love it that you make rugelach (sp?) once a year. So do I, but they are my "Christmas" cookies. Be well.

Like many others have stated, I started your blog for the art, but feel as if you are a close friend even though we have never met (a problem I would LOVE to correct by taking one of your classes someday!) I think of you as my sometimes quirky, Jewish, Yankee friend who is a fantastic Artist and puts some really weird recipes on her blog. Hope this does not offend you, but I am a 5th-generation Texan not surrounding my many Jews...LOL! I too have had a rough year with the death of my husband of and his mom in a five week period. He was disabled and she was elderly. This Sunday would have been our 40th anniversary. I GET that art cannot be your priority right now. Sending love!

Me too - I read your blog regularly and love it as is! Great mix of everything, and you are so right - everything is art. Happy Holiday to you and your family. Peace and many blessings, Annie

I agree with everyone else, keep up with the art/life mix... I had the same thing, do I write about my trip, or just my art, Life won out.. Life is art, and art is life.. Keep sharing. whenever I start to "worry" about it for my blog, someone I never thought was following me, writes a thank you.
I thank you for sharing!
hugs, vivian

Shana Tovah....I love love your blog about what is...whatever that is from post to post...appreciating that you weave life and family and travel and teaching and creating into a beautiful story..I would love to have your recipe...when you find it....

People can be rude! I think it is the bits of life interspersed with the art that make it truly interesting. One wouldn't get to really learn about the artist without it.
Keep doing what you do.

OMG, can you just imagine how boring that person's life must be? If one finds it somehow satisfying to complain about another's blog... seriously, that person needs to find some life fulfillment! Meanwhile, I enjoy reading whatever anyone wants to write about. I know how to skim.

Enjoy the holidays, although I'm sure you'll miss your mom.

Seems to me if that reader didn't want to read some of the blog entries she had the power to just not read it. Art and life and manners. Art is an outgrowth of our lives.
And yes please post the recipe. They look wonderful!
