a new week

Calendars always make Sunday the first day of the week, but they are wrong.  First of all, everybody knows that Sunday is the second day of the weekEND. End. E-N-D.  Everybody knows except the calendar people.  They just don't get it.

Why would the school week and the work week start on Monday if it weren't the first day of the week? Where are the people in the billing office when you need to dispute an invoice? Or the doctor's office when you are sick? OUT. The message says "please call back during business hours; Monday-Friday, 9:am to 4:pm or some such.  MONDAY is the beginning of the week the way September is the beginning of the year. Back to school. Back to work. A new season, despite what the calendar claims.

My new week and new season began today (Monday). I got two of my mother's bills paid and then the phone rang - a friend with a crisis. Two more friends called and then Jennifer and her son arrived so we could go shopping for a pair of black pants and a white shirt he needs for his middle school graduation.

Jennifer was Marty's beloved caregiver and has become my friend.  We did our shopping at one mall and then drove to the Short Hills Mall for lunch and to walk around and ogle the luxury goods that we neither want nor can afford.  When we got to Crate and Barrel, I had to treat myself to a Cuisinart ice cream machine.

Every summer I decide I need one and then I buy Haagen Dazs instead and never get to it. This time, it was sitting there and waving at me - so it came home with me. Now I have to look on the Internet to find recipes I want to make.  But that can wait till tomorrow.  I have been sleeping pretty well but waking up at the crack of dawn each morning.  Maybe tomorrow I will sleep till 7:00.

I saw the ice cream machine in an ad. My sister and I are going to buy mom one for her birthday in October. That way she can make ice cream and cookies for the residents of her memory care facility. We made cookies yesterday.

Where I am Sunday IS the beginning of the school and work week. And, the beginning of the new year DOES come out in September!

Have fun with the ice cream machine! But, it's still easier to buy the ice cream...

Pay no attention to icecream recipes on the web. Buy Ices, the Definitive Guide by Caroline Liddell and Robin Weir. I have been making icecream for years from this book and there is no recipe in there which is not good. I'll give you my very own recipe as well. Make up a litre of French vanilla icecream when you are ready to put it into containers for the freezer, add the best part of a box of After Eights cut up into bits. To die for.

They do sell calendars that have Monday at the beginning - I had one a few years back (the purse kind) so I'm sure you search one out if you were militant and wanted to make a stand LOL!!! Still you know what happened??? I was constantly putting things on Tuesday that were suppose to be on Monday and so on and so on - frustrating that I couldn't get used to the new format LOL felt VERY stupid each time I did it!

Let me know your secret if you ever discover how to sleep in all the way to 7, okay? I am stuck in a groove, and am out of bed before 5am every morning! :-<

Actually, I was up at 6 and went for a walk: a good way to start a summer day before it gets too hot.

The occasional calendar that I've had over the years that DID start with Monday always threw me off terribly. I booked everything on the wrong day, sometimes for months at a time. I kinda like that inviolable weekend border of a day on each end of the line of a week. But I agree, the week really starts on Monday!
Glad to hear you're doing well.

Cuisinart did some good marketing last week. I and several friends bought one of these. I bought it as a Father's Day present, but WE'VE actually used it twice already.

I have one of those ice cream makers, and I LOVE it! It's so easy to use. I cut up fresh fruit, put it in the blender with Splenda, mint, lemon or lime juice, and/or flavored extracts, and a little water if needed, then pour that into the freezer. 10 min. later, I have wonderful stuff!

In Australia our school year starts at the end of January, after the 6 week Summer holiday. Now it's our Winter so typing with fingerless gloves as I've been too lazy to get the heater out of it's box!

Hi Rayna
A great ice-cream recipe book is "The Perfect Scoop" by David Lebovitz. You'll never need another ice-cream recipe book if you have this one.
Love your blog!
