street art splasher

Remember this? When I was in NY a couple of weeks ago, I took a picture of a mailbox that somebody had dripped paint all over. The mailbox was right outside the art gallery I had just left, but I didn't connect the dots. I just thought it would make a great screen. It did.

However, 10 days after I shot this picture, an article appeared in the NY Times about the protesters who were throwing paint over street art to protest the fact that street art in NY has gone commercial. Huh? Today there was another article saying that the protesters are just throwing paint blobs, handbills, and stinkbombs at street art and galleries without having any real focus for their campaign. It's not clear what they are trying to do. The mailbox must have been a trial run.
I took the screen with me over the weekend and at one point, demo'd how to print with a Thermofax . Here is the result.

On another note, here is my demo piece for the soy wax. I used these items because they are rather graphic illustrations of what you can do, but I think this piece looks too much like others I have printed. Can I get out from under myself?

One more picture I forgot to post. This is what happens when you try to open a plastic container full of dye that has been sitting in the sun and has created a vacuum. Fortunately, I was wearing my oldest, paint-splattered Birks. Don't try this at home. This morning, in my nice hot shower at 78 Sullivan, I gave myself a Reduran pedicure and most of it is gone. Never a dull moment

At least when I get dyes on my legs and feet, I use more colors! Just finished a whole bunch of dyeing and my middle section looked like I had a major bruise from all the blue and red dyes that went through me shirt. Neat screen!

I did my last dyefest outdoors on the deck in 90+ degree heat. It seemed reasonable to wear an old bathing suit. When I was finished I looked like a beating victim and Jim told me that if he got arrested, bail and legal fees would have to come straight out of my business account.

Love that screen! And the blue toes!

Yes that screen is a real hit. I am a fan of the dripped paint. When we were in Columbus last month, there was a wall with a car parked closely next to it and paint dripped down the wall and onto the car. It was lovely. We have no idea what it was about but what artist can resist streaks of paint?

It must have been a weekend for dye/discharge accidents. For once I didn't change into old pants before discharging fabric. My new apron from SDA covered only the front, so now I have a rear end mark on one of my favorite pairs of black pants. Luckily it looks like they'll discharge to blue. Another project coming up, lol.

I forgot to tell you.. one of the targeted street artists that the "Splasher" has messed with is the one who did the installation that we took pictures of and that you posted a few weeks ago!

I like the soywax piece, but darn, I know the feeling -- how to get past what one is already good and comfortable with.

Thank you for posting the photo of your blue foot. And thanks for everyone who posted comments about their spills. Sometimes I think I'm the only messy dyer around....it helps to have company!
ps. Love the new works. Seems like I've been seeing a lot of tape being used lately, I'll have to give it a try.
