what is a blogger to do?

It is a dilemma when you want to blog and really have nothing of interest to say. Do you say the boring things? (like D.H. calling my cell to ask me how to turn off the oven? or my 92 y/o mother calling to tell me she'd fallen and couldn't get up? I'm in CALIFORNIA, forgodsakes, ma!) Should I make things up? (I'm not that imaginative) or not blog at all? Then there is the matter of photos. Personally, I prefer visuals in somebody's blog if I am going to read it. If you think about it, this is ridiculous: I don't need picture books to be engaged with a good story - so why do I need pictures to be engaged with a blog post? Maybe if it were interesting enough it wouldn't need pictures. OTOH - not all pictures are interesting. See what I mean? Did you really need to see this? To backtrack a bit... Carol Henke and I drove to Culver City to meet Karen Rips, who is my host for the rest of this trip. Karen and I hot-footed it to Quilters Studio in Newbury Park -- where I am teaching for the next five days. What a wonderful store!! Eileen Alber has such a fabulous selection of fabric that art quilters from Europe order from her. But I digress... today, I was getting set up and organized (or what passes for organized) for the rest of the week. After that, Karen and I had a deluxe dinner out. On the walk back from the restaurant to the hotel where I am staying, I got out my camera and took a few pictures to post tonight. I don't recall seeing these blue-purple fleurs in New Jersey, so I could not resist. And this view from my room gave me something I can really work with. Texture!!So now, having made the requisite blog post and bored you to tears, I am signing off, scheduling a wake up call for the crack of dawn, and getting ready for another teaching day. Come back soon and visit.

Say hey to Karen. I just love her work. I want to meet her some day soon!! I have had a lot of blog angst lately because I don't really have any personal work to share. I need to remedy that.

It's tempting to fire back with something boring, but no, this wasn't. No tears. On the contrary: The eye of an artist can find something picturesque everywhere. -- The flowers are quite familiar to me from our Portugal trips.

"Lily of the Nile" is the common name for the flowers, and I can't spell the botanical name. Love 'em, though!

I would think this is a common problem, but it's amazing what one can think of to write about! As you did and it was interesting. And I loved the tiles on that roof. Really inspirational! Val

I hear ya' Rayna! I used lack of photos as a non-blogging excuse, but that obviously won't work any more because, once again, you found art in the everyday. P.S. I finally managed to blog yesterday.

More frustrating than not having much to say is having things to say and pictures to post and blogger closes the door. Grrrrr.
The flower is an Agapanthus and they come in dark to light shades of blue-violet and also in white, although the white is more rarely seen around here. Here is an interesting view of the plant: http://tinyurl.com/nc58tt

The blue purple flowers are called agapanthus here in New Zealand. They are regarded as a weed as they seed and pop up in our native bush. However, they are so spectacular in summer, along fencelines and roadsides that people still plant them in specific locations.

Hi Rayna

Those are indeed agapanthus - I believe they are native to South Africa. They grow vigorously in many parts of Australia, and in some states are a declared noxious weed and you aren't allowed to grow them as they take over everything. Ours is a very fragile environment and so many imported plants, animals etc have done huge damage to our ecology - don't get me going on rabbits.....

Agapanthus - thanks!
