variety show
I got a thank-you note yesterday from Bonnie Oullette telling me what a great time she and her friends had doing gelatin printing from my book. She said they had printed some great fabrics and she loves the process. Today, she sent me some pictures of pieces she has made using the fabrics she printed. Here are two. This first one looks like whole cloth and it is Bonnie's favorite. I can see why.I am always amazed at what creative things people do with the gelatin fabrics.
Last week a packet of luxuriously large (20"x 72") crepe de chine scarves arrived. I shibori'd one of them and am tempted to keep it for myself. It's so beautiful I won't even let Effie wear it. This is what nickel and chino MX look like on silk. Sort of mauve and blue-grey.
Today I stayed home to pack teaching supplies and wait for the appliance man. A few days ago I whined about our 6 month old Kitchen Aid undercounter ice maker being broken. We are surviving the ice deficit, but only because I put some cubes in bags in the freezer. (can you say spoiled brat?) The repairman was here today.
Him: "M'am - you have a bad water valve and it has to be replaced."
me: "can you do that today?"
Him "Of course not, we have to order the part. It should be here in 2-3 days."
Me: (long, unspoken sentence full of expletives deleted) SIGH...
Him: "Yeah, they are all junk - made out of plastic, and so expensive."
Me: "Did you read the article in yesterday's NY Times?"
He hadn't. But I had and if you own any appliances or are about to buy new ones, you need to read it. I was in hysterics - because it is pathetically true. This is why the Gillmans have a whole new kitchen. Go have a laugh. Print it out - it's worth the read.

And if that's not bad enough I swear they build the new houses in Florida to self destruct in 10 years. I guess they figure the average life of the people buying them and figure the people won't outlast the houses!
And that's after you spend the first 3 years making them come back to fix things that weren't done right first.
But I still wouldn't go back to the "good old days".

Hysterical article, thanks for the laugh. The last time I replaced my vacuum cleaner, after like 10 years of good service and my personally repairing it when necessary, the guy told me it'd only been meant to last for 2 years! Unbelievable. My current one is 8 years old, so we'll see how much longer it lasts!
What is the name of this crime? Screwnapping?
That is a gorgeous scraf Rayna. To answer your question: I live in the north east of Orlando, the city is called Longwood, two hours drive from Tampa aprox. and 40 minutes from Daytona. Where exactly in Florida are you teaching this coming January?
saludos (regards) from the south
Sorry about your ice maker. My new wall oven has a vent which spews moist icky oven air (read: dirty) out onto the front of the oven....very nice! So, I have to clean the stainless steel every time I use the oven. Sounds easy enough, but who would ever design an oven like that? A man, I suppose! What is wrong with people these days? OK, I'm off to read the NYT article. Oh, and I do love that scarf! You can send me that too! LOL
xo
Rayna, you are such a busy person, I have to contradict your comment, you have kids AND a job.
By the way: Is there anything in your book on photo transfer?
Reyna- thanks for the link to the article. "Planned obselesence" indeed. Reminds me of our refrigerator fiasco a couple months back: 16 months old and requiring $700+ in repairs. We ended up buying a new one WITH an extended warranty (damn them all!).
The pictures of the printing are gorgeous- of course. You are slowly trying to corrupt me into taking on fabric dying, aren't you?
Later!!
When my dad died three years ago he had the same harvest green Maytag washer and dryer that we had when I was growing up! My 8-9ish year old washer is now possessed and will not cut off. It goes through every cycle OVER and OVER and OVER...I had been complaining recently that it wasn't getting things as clean as I thought it should. I must say that the load which ran continuously for 10 hours while we slept is SPARLKING, SQUEAKY clean! Lord help me when the water bill comes!! Goes to show ya, be careful what you say...(and guess what I'm getting for Christmas??) UGH!!
Oh, BTW, the scarf is GORGEOUS!!
I'm sorry, Karen, I couldn't help laughing - but it isn't funny. Squeaky clean laundry after 10 cycles. My mother's apartment in Fla. still has shag carpeting and harvest gold appliances. The shag can go but I sort of hate to replace the appliances, even though they are soooo ugly.
P.S. - thanks everybody for your comments on the scarf. Effie is now wearing it and when I get time, I'll make some others. I love the size! This is the kind of scarf to wear to an art opening.
Completely I share your opinion. In it something is also to me it seems it is good idea. I agree with you. le levitra Bravo, the ideal answer.
